How are you Telling Your Story?

We all have one goal; we want the attention of consumers. As an end result, this is easy to ascertain, what you need to discern is whether you are worthy of the attention you crave and desire.

What do you hope to achieve through creating content to tell your story? What is your goal? Directionless content will not help you with your ROI. Successful marketers look at ways of communicating with consumers in new, attention grabbing ways that aren’t being done elsewhere. A great way to do this is through using exiting content and presenting it through different mediums. Content does not necessarily mean text. Content is everything! For example, not all people are going to like or want to read blogs, but they could however enjoy clicking through a SlideShare presentation, or watching a clip, either way, it’s all content. Visual design is a great way to grab the attention of consumers you have been missing out on.

This leads me on to ask, ‘what are your views on platforms’? Yes of course it is the platform which enables you to launch your story, but if you aren’t reaching your target audience, what is the point?! One article or blog won’t cut it. You need to create a channel which will consistently engage your target audience.

In relation to this point, and a very insightful post on Social Mouths Blog I read recently, Kevin Spacey gave a speech at the Edinburgh Television Festival, in which he spoke about his television show House of Cards, and he says “… through this new form of distribution [of House of Cards through the platform Netflix] we have demonstrated that we have learned the lesson that the music industry didn’t learn. Give people what they want, when they want it, in the form they want it in, at a reasonable price…”.

How are you Telling Your Story?

Remember, you are not alone in wanting to share and tell your story. Every Tom, Dick and Harry thinks they have something unique and special to say about themselves, or business, or brand; so the question is how do you plan to compete with that? It’s a big task, but done properly and the rewards will have you smiling from ear to ear.

One thing I distinctly remember being taught is ‘show, don’t tell’. Don’t tell you customers that they need your service/product, but show them. Take them on a journey which will lead them to make the discovery that yes; you are what they have been looking for. Human behaviour inherently means that if you tell someone to do something, they won’t want to do it, but if they come to the realisation on their own, then they own the decision.

Storytelling, content, whatever you want to call it, it’s been around since the dawn of man. It is how knowledge has been passed on: before books and other intelligent forms of communication, we relied on storytelling. The power of good storytelling has the ability to transform our day to day lives. Good content creation doesn’t just answer questions, but it gets people thinking and asking even more. It raises awareness of the worth of your service/product and the customers resolve to have /need it. If your content can stir conversation, then it’s doing its job. Then it’s revolving around the customer.
